Evolutionary Biology: Sterile Saviours

نویسنده

چکیده

Sterile sperm castes are widespread, but their significance remains enigmatic. New experiments on Drosophila pseudoobscura reveal that sterile sperm may promote the survival of fertilising sperm inside the spermicidal female reproductive tract.

Developmental cheating and the evolutionary biology of Dictyostelium and Myxococcus.

Micro-organisms, whether the prokaryotic Myxococcus or the eukaryotic amoeba Dictyostelium, can achieve an impressive level of multicellular cooperativity and it is revealing to ask how this came to be and how it differs from the cooperativity found in animal development. This is not a sterile exercise that begins and ends with speculation – there is a usefulness, a utility to evolutionary theo...

Resolving the evolution of sterile worker castes: a window on the advantages and disadvantages of monogamy.

Many social Hymenoptera species have morphologically sterile worker castes. It is proposed that the evolutionary routes to this obligate sterility must pass through a 'monogamy window', because inclusive fitness favours individuals retaining their reproductive totipotency unless they can rear full siblings. Simulated evolution of sterility, however, finds that 'point of view' is critically impo...

Male sterility, fitness gain curves and the evolution of gender specialization from distyly in Erythroxylum havanense.

The evolution of dioecy from a monomorphic hermaphroditic condition requires two mutations, one producing females and one producing males. Conversely, a single mutation sterilizing one sexual function in one morph of distylous species would result in functional dioecy because such a mutation also affects the complementary function in the other morph. In this study, we tested these ideas with Er...

The evolutionary origin of an altruistic gene.

Although the conditions favoring altruism are being increasingly understood, the evolutionary origins of the genetic basis for this behavior remain elusive. Here, we show that reproductive altruism (i.e., a sterile soma) in the multicellular green alga, Volvox carteri, evolved via the co-option of a life-history gene whose expression in the unicellular ancestor was conditioned on an environment...
